Gamma-GT (GGT): what the value means – and when it is elevated
Gamma-glutamyl transferase
A liver and bile-duct enzyme - a sensitive marker of hepatobiliary stress and one of the body’s earliest responders to alcohol and metabolic strain.
The basics
Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in several organs, but the GGT circulating in your blood comes almost entirely from the liver and bile ducts. When liver cells or the biliary system are under strain, GGT is released into the bloodstream - which makes it one of the more sensitive routine markers of hepatobiliary health.
Why this marker matters
GGT rises in response to a wide range of liver-related stressors - fatty liver, obstructed bile flow, certain medications, and notably alcohol, to which it is especially sensitive. On its own it is non-specific, but in context it is a useful early signal. Population studies have linked higher GGT - even within the “normal” band - to greater long-term metabolic and cardiovascular risk.
Where the typical ranges sit
Roughly < 60 U/L in men and < 40 U/L in women; laboratory ranges vary.
Typical adult upper limits sit around 55–60 U/L for men and 38–40 U/L for women, though reference intervals differ by laboratory and method. Lower is generally better - within the normal band, higher GGT has been associated with greater metabolic and cardiovascular risk. A single mildly raised value is common and often benign.
Reference ranges differ between laboratories and guidelines. Your CHIRAYOU report uses the range reported by the analysing laboratory, and your interpretation should be discussed with a physician.
Common influencers
- Alcohol intake (GGT is particularly sensitive; can stay raised for weeks)
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome
- Bile-duct obstruction or gallbladder disease
- Several medications (e.g. some anticonvulsants, certain antibiotics)
- Body weight and insulin resistance
- Viral hepatitis and other liver conditions
If your value is outside the range
An isolated mild elevation is frequently driven by lifestyle factors and often settles - GGT can fall over a few weeks after reducing alcohol, for example. A persistently or markedly elevated value, or one combined with other abnormal liver tests, should be reviewed with a physician, who may look at ALT/AST, an ultrasound, and your medication and alcohol history.
Where this comes from
One of ten markers in the baseline test
Gamma-GT is one of 10 markers in the CHIRAYOU baseline blood test — €99 one-time, no subscription. This is not a standalone GGT test: you get Gamma-GT plus the context from the same sample, at home in Germany.
